Twenty-five years into the craze, it's impossible to abridge pin trading into a few paragraphs, but back in 2000 the hobby was new! Here's a scan of a WDW rack folder that shows Guests how to get started and where to find pins for sale. Take a look at how few places actually offered pins at the time.

Magic Kingdom: Main Street Town Square and Exposition Hall

Downtown Disney: West Side and Marketplace

Disney-MGM Studios:  Hollywood Junction

EPCOT: Millennium Central and World Showcase (by American Adventure)

Animal Kingdom: [No location given.]

Wide World of Sports Complex: Baseball Stadium

Disney's Boardwalk Inn

"Here's how to get started. Stop by one of the official Pin Stations around Walt Disney World Resort. Here you can purchase pins, trade pins with other Guests and even trade pins with Disney Cast Members.

Pin Stations will also sell accessories such as lanyards, hats, vests and a commemorative Millennium book.

Throughout the Park and Resort areas you will see Disney Cast Members wearing lanyards filled with Disney pins. If they have one you like, feel free to trade a pin with them (or they may even ask you if you have one they like!).

With hundreds of Disney pins and pin sets available, you and your family will enjoy creating your own unique memento to recollect your visit to Walt Disney World Resort."

What were some of the memorable things for you about the reading hobby back then? Were you into getting the original Mystery/Surprise pins, like “Angry Donald” or “Mickey for President”?

It was definitely different in 2000/2001. Yes, I wanted the Mickey for President and the Inauguration pins which I still have both today. Standing in line waiting for pins to be released. Remember, this was before cell phones, whatnot, eBay was new (started in 1995), no Facebook. So when we would get pins and/or extras, it was to trade. We met monthly at the mall and looked forward to trading with everyone. The edition sizes were larger so you weren’t buying pins to just to sell at a higher price.  Pin trading was new and we all wanted to do that.
